An Amazing Selection of Tours for 2018
ETHIOPIA - FEBRUARY 2018
Ethiopian Village near Bahar Dar
Following the success of our previous trips to Ethiopia, we return once again to experience this strange and exotic country. Jews first reached Ethiopia over two thousand years ago and have left their mark on many aspects of everyday life. They were granted political independence as early as the 4th century CE, and can trace their Jewish heritage back to the biblical High Priest Zadok. We will visit remote villages, meet far-flung Jewish communities and encounter everyday life in one of the most fascinating countries in Africa.
There is an option to combine this trip with the trip to Uganda which follows immediately.
Tentative dates: 6-13 February 2018

The Abayudaya: The Jews of Uganda - February 2018
The Abayudaya: The Jews of Uganda
If you have been following my trip schedule, you will have heard that I have been planning a group to Uganda in the coming year. The highlight of the trip will be a Shabbat with the Abayudaya Jews, a tribe in north-east Uganda that adopted Judaism 150 years ago. There are many tribes and groups around the world who consider themselves to be Jewish, and the question of “Who Is a Jew?” and “Where are the Lost Tribes of Israel” will be the central themes of this journey.
Our visit to the Abayudaya will include a visit to local Jewish Schools, local fair-trade coffee growers, Shabbat with the community and a local music festival. In addition, we will visit the source of the White Nile in Jinja, enjoy a safari cruise along the Albert Nile on our way to the Murchison Falls (one of the great nature sites in Africa) and go chimpanzee trekking.
There are many options to extend your visit including trekking to see mountain gorillas in the impenetrable forests in western Uganda.
This is an experience not to be missed!
Tentative Dates: 14-21 February 2018.

Vilnius and Beyond
There is so much Jewish history in Lithuania that it is hard to know where to start. The focus of this trip will be the school of Rabbi Elijah of Vilna – known as the Vilna Gaon. We will learn about the first generation of Hasidim, and the wars between them and those who opposed the new movement. We will visit the Karaite town of Trakai and learn about the founding of the Mussar Movement in Kaunas (Kovno). We will also learn about the role that Vilna played in the emergence of the Jewish Socialist and Zionist Movements. This is a fascinating period of history which had huge ramifications on our modern Jewish life.
While it is impossible to travel in Eastern Europe without reflecting on the Holocaust, this is not predominantly a holocaust trip. The focus will be Jewish life in Lithuania before the holocaust.
Dates:
11-15 October, 2018. (Thursday – Monday)
