The People of the Book …
The invention of the printing press changed the intellectual lives of the Jewish people forever. Nowhere had a greater impact on the growth of Hebrew printing more than Soncino and Venice. This tour will set out from Milan and will include visits to Soncino, which was home to one of the first Hebrew printing presses, Parma, whose Poletta Library holds the biggest collection of Hebrew manuscripts in continental Europe and the beautiful town of Ferrara. We will spend Shabbat in Padua, whose university was one of the few that was open to Jews in medieval times, and where the first modern Rabbinical school was established. The tour will end in Venice, where the first editions of the Talmud were printed and which was the most important centre of Hebrew printing in the 15th and 16th centuries. All this in the most beautiful cities of north-eastern Italy with their amazing culture and gastronomy.
