Provence - The Pope's Jews
_
March 22-25, 2012 (Thursday - Sunday)Overview:
Provence was once home to a vibrant and creative Jewish community that has had lasting impact on Jewish culture. During the Middle Ages Provence was under the direct rule of the Pope – and the Jews of Provence were known 'Juif de Pape' – the Pope’s Jews. While the rest of French Jewry were expelled, the Jews of Provence developed a unique culture blending influences from Spain, Germany and Italy. Today there is still a large Jewish presence in the area. Visits include the oldest synagogue in France in Carpentras, the the beautiful cities of Arles and Avignon andthe important and scenic Rabbinic centre in Posquiere. We will also spend Shabbat with the Jewish community of Aix-en-Provence and discover the Jewish roots of the city. Not to be missed! |
