Introduction:
In December 1496, King Manuel I of Portugal signed a decree expelling the Jews from his country. Thus the long saga of the Crypto-Jews of Portugal started. In this trip we will uncover the lasting legacy of this story and how it continues to resonate amongst Jews around the world today.
There will be many highlights. We will spend Shabbat with the local Jewish community, visit hilltop towns that sheltered hidden Jews, visit Portugal’s 2 main cities – Lisbon and Porto – and its only National Park – the Serra de Estrela. From the beautiful town of Castelo De Vide to the world famous Gulbenkian Museum, you will not want to miss this trip.
Itinerary (Outline - subject to change)
Thursday 23 March: Lisbon
General orientation tour of Lisbon including: St George's Castle, Marquis of Pombal Square,
Belem, Rossio Square, the Alfama Neighbourhood. Overnight: Lisbon
Friday 24 March: Sintra
The Royal Court of the Portuguese Monarchy in the 14th Century. After returning to Lisbon we will
join the local Jewish community for a Friday evening service and Dinner. Overnight: Lisbon
Saturday 25 March : Lisbon
Shabbat services and lunch with the local Jewish community.
Afternoon visit to the Gulbenkian Museum
Overnight: Lisbon
Sunday and Monday 26-27 March: Mountain Villages of Eastern Portugal
Visit the villages of Tomar, Castelo Branca, Castel de Vide, Colvilha, Belmonte –
villages where many Crypto-Jews hid, where some remain hidden while others have returned to Judaism in our day.
Tuesday 28 March: Porto
Mekor Hayim Synagogue. Bus tour of Porto.
Porto Airport.
Flights:
You will need to book your own flights.
There are direct flights from London to Portugal offered by EasyJet, Ryanair, British Airways and TAP.
The trip starts in Lisbon and finishes in Porto.
Recommended Flights:

Return: (From Porto) : EasyJet 2098 Dep: 17:35 – Arr: 19:55
Note that the return flight is from Porto - not Lisbon - so you need to book it as 2 singles rather than a return flight.

Extending your trip:
I am happy to arrange extra nights for those who wish to arrive early or to extend their stay in Portugal at the end of the trip. In the past people have chosen to extend their stay in Portugal for a Douro River Cruise.
Cancellation policy:
Until: 15 December 2016 - You are entitled to a full refund.
Between 15 December 2016 - 15 January 2017: - Loss of deposit.
15 January 2017 - 15 February 2017: Loss of 50% payment.
After 15 February 2017 - Loss of 100% payment.
