Ethiopia - The Lost Tribes

Overview:
Come and explore the spellbinding history of the Jews who reached Ethiopia two thousand years ago. They were granted political independence as early as the 4th century CE, and can trace their Jewish heritage back to the Biblical High Priest Zadok.
There will be 2 trips in February 2013. The first trip will be from 5-12 February 2013 and the second trip will be from 12-19 February 2013. In each case, the flight out from London will leave the evening before the trip and the will leave Addis Ababa on the following day at 01:00 am and arrive in London at 7:00 am.

Arrive in Addis Ababa. Tour of city including visit to Ethiopian National Museum to see ‘Lucy’ - the oldest human fossil.
Axum. Visit the Palace of the Queen of Sheba. The Ethiopians believe that the ‘True Ark of the Covenant’ is housed in the ‘St Mary of Zion’ church. We will also visit the Stelae field. More Information Lalibela: Site of 11 world acclaimed rock hewn churches carved out of a single block of granite. More information: We will visit a Falasha Village to get an idea of the conditions and lifestyle of the Ethiopian Jews before they moved to Israel. The Falasha we not allowed to own land – and therefore specialised in making pottery. Friday night Kabbalat Shabbat and service at the Jewish Agency compound in Gondar. Morning service with the local Jewish community. Afternoon walking tour of Gondar – which will include an amazing 64 castles and palaces which is the main tourist attraction in Gondar. We will drive through the countryside along the length of Lake Tana – the source of the Blue Nile. Once we arrive in Bahar Dar we will take a boat journey over the lake to some of the many churches and monasteries. There will also be an option to visit the Blue Nile Falls – a 35 meter waterfall a short distance from Bahar Dar – where the Nile starts to flow from Lake Tana. A chance to visit the largest market in Africa - the Markado. In the evening we will meet with the Kechene Jews of Addis Ababa – and learn the story of another lost Ethiopian Jewish tribe. Free day in Addis Ababa. A chance to visit the Mecado - the largest Market in Africa. |
